India Passes Grim Milestone of 1 Crore Coronavirus Infections

New Delhi: India’s coronavirus tally breached the 1 crore mark on Saturday, the world’s second highest, even though the number of new daily cases has fallen sharply since a mid-September peak.

It reported 25,152 new infections and 347 deaths in the past 24 hours, data from the health ministry showed. The virus has so far killed 145,136 people in the country.

After hitting a peak of nearly 98,000 cases in September, daily cases are now down to an average of 27,000.

According to the health ministry, as of 8 am on December 19, there are 3,08,751 active cases, while 95,50,712 people have been cured or discharged. 

With 17,459,296 cases, only the US has reported more cases of the viral infection than India. India’s death toll is the third highest in the world, after the US (313,588) and Brazil (185,650)
