In an interview to cut through the clutter, Ashish Jha, a professor of public health, has said he is “not particularly concerned about the delta plus” variant, and that judging by what we definitely know at the moment, it is likely to be “just another variant of delta – not worse, not better”.
Jha also said that the 12-16 week gap between two doses of the Covishield vaccine is the right strategy for India at a time of vaccine shortage. However, he expressed concern that over the last week or so, the sharp decline in the number of COVID-19 cases seems to be plateauing around the 45,000 mark, instead of declining all the day. He also said that he agrees with India’s principal scientific advisor, K. VijayRaghavan, that a third wave is inevitable but that if the right steps are taken, it can be mitigated.
